Apparently President Obama is more open publicly about his faith, and specifically about his faith in Jesus Christ, than President Bush was during his administration. Of course every word any president speaks is analyzed multiple times. Read THIS ARTICLE about one such analyzation.
This is sad news. I do not like late-term abortions, or any abortions for that matter. I love life. This is not the way, however, to solve a problem. When will we learn that the kindness of God leads to repentance?
Watch this short clip with President Obama’s potential Supreme Court nominee talking about the role of the court in establishing law. Obviously it is out of context and that should never be the deciding factor in making a decision about someone, but if she believes what she says then it is a major dividing line among what people think judges should do. Do judges set laws or interpret laws?
President Obama is expected to submit the name of federal appeals judge Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court replacing Justice David Souter who is retiring. Read an article HERE. Sotomayor would be the first Hispanic on the court, which brings with it political pressure for approval of her nomination. Conservatives and liberals have battled in recent years for the political favor with the fastest growing demographic in the country.
All indications are that President Obama will name Governor John Huntsman of Utah as the next ambassador to China. He does speak some Chinese and has an adopted daughter from China, so at first glance he appears a good fit. The two-term widely popular governor, however, is reportedly a Mormon, a Republican and a fiscal conservative, and he backed John McCain in the presidential election. It was rumored that he could have been a cabinet member had McCain been elected and some have thought he may appear as a Republican candidate for president in 2012.
President Obama has opted out of most activities in the National Day of Prayer. While he says he intends to pray privately, as a part of his normal daily practice, he will not be active, nor will any of the executive leadership of his administration, in the organized activities of the day. Personally I think the President should recognize the importance of this day to many and at the very least he should have sent token representation from the executive branch of government, but I am not surprised by his absence. The basic organizers of this event have not been among his greatest supporters.
It is interesting to watch Republicans organize attempts to reclaim their party. As one who has usually voted and supported conservative candidates, I generally agree with the philosophies of government held by the leading Republicans. In recent years, however, I have been less enthusiastic about parties in general, not completely feeling that either major party completely represents my values.
Apparently President Obama will have an early opportunity to place his stamp on the Supreme Court. Justice David Souter has told the White House he plans to retire at the end of the court’s current session. Read the full story HERE. While Souter has proven to be more moderate than some expected, his replacement may be even more liberal.
I love politics and government. I know not everyone does, but I love a good debate, I love discussion, and I love the political process. We’ve lived through a lot of political and government discussions in our house. The boys and I enjoy it. Cheryl, although being a voter and very patriotic (I wouldn’t have married her otherwise….j/k…sorta), she doesn’t like the argument and debate process. She also doesn’t like boxing. Whatever!
