It has always amazed me to see someone I’m supposed to be leading get their inspiration and even direction at times from someone other than me. Those type things will happen throughout your career. It’s only natural.

Over the years I have learned an important principle that keeps me from being bothered when this occurs. Leadership influence is gained through relationship and trust. Some people who are supposed to follow me have closer relationships, and therefore deeper trust, in other people. The successful leader allows these relationships to develop freely knowing that, as long as the vision of the organization is upheld, ultimately if the people under their leadership are growing and maturing in their role, then the objective you are trying to reach is being accomplished.

As their leader, when the succeed, regardless of who influenced them, I succeed as well. (And get recognition for their accomplishments…whether I’m seeking that or not.)
