Most people who know me well know I like to run…

I have lots of other runners around me…

I get many invitations to run with other people…

I occasionally do, and have enjoyed the conversations…

But I generally prefer to run alone…

Why?

Running is my down time…

It’s where I think the best…

It’s where I unwind most…

It’s where I’m freed of technology, and conversation, and stress…

It’s where God sometimes chooses to speak to me…

I run alone because it one way I’m made a better person…

What is that one thing you do best alone?

  • I really needed this today. Thank you, Ron. I suffered from depression several years ago, and it was actually running that helped get me through it. To this day, there are few things I enjoy more than going for a run at sunrise. The crispness in the air, the quietness, getting the blood flowing, all while having a clear mind to contemplate and be thankful for everything God has given me.

I don't know why but I like to cut grass and do lawn work,, sometimes God speaks so amazing stuff to my heart when I do that. Crazy huh?

Not crazy…I used to love to do that…I outgrew it though…and so this year I moved to a condo! 🙂

A solo runner also, I can recall many specific Words form God at specific locations. But yesterday enjoyed a race in San Francisco with 55,000 people. I sang my way up an 11.5% grade and prayed my way through Golden Gate park, prayed for people all around me, it was simply thrilling! Individuals in community, encouraging each other toward a goal. Now if the church could just emulate, pilgrimage together, fixed on Christ but running our individual races. So many parallels.

That sounds awesome. I'll be in San Francisco this summer. Looking forward to it.

    Hey, that's the way I started running….run…then walk…then run.

Let's just say I run, walk…anyway, I agree that it is a time of solitude for me. I like how you write that "It’s where God sometimes chooses to speak to me…" What a privilege that God chooses to speak to us….I'm totally blown away by that. So in a way, my run-walk helps me to be a better listener to God.

    Thanks for sharing.

I like running, but really, any kind of workout I can do is great for me; It allows me to un-wind, to think, pray, just let go of whatever may be dragging me down. I have been known to use the earbuds from an iPod without hooking them up, just so people would think I wasn't able to hear them, and would leave me to my thoughts! I know that's not fair nor honest, but it works on really bad days.

I agree. This year I'm actually adding more gym time to my exercise routine.

Running, biking, thinking, and many other things. I think as introverts we do best when we are alone physically for some things. However there are also many things online where it helps to have people around and I enjoy doing it with others vs alone.

  • I too love running solo! It sparks my creativity and releases my mental stress a lot. When I could not run on any day for any reason, I take time to be alone for certain minutes to think and introspect myself (especially in the early morning or late evening)

I like to run alone as well.
    There's no pressure.
    It's just me and God.
