Scripture Memorization, Week 1

For years, I had a practice of committing Bible verses to memory. Over the years, I probably learned hundreds of Bible verses.  I literally “hid God’s Word” in my heart.  Whatever the excuse, I haven’t made that a part of my spiritual disciplines in the last few years.  I think it’s time to bring the habit back and this time I want to invite you along.

Would you commit to memorizing one verse with me a week in 2011?

Here’s how this will work.   Each Saturday I’ll post a new verse.  You can write it on an index card to carry with you…or put it on your refrigerator…at your bedside…or maybe write it with an erasable marker on the mirror where you get ready each day.  Whatever it takes to see it consistently throughout the week.  You should recite it many times.  By the end of the week you’ll know the verse and we’ll start over again the next week.  Is it a deal?  Are you up for the challenge?

Here’s the first verse for us to memorize:

Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. Proverbs 4:23

Please leave me a comment that you are accepting this challenge.

(Feel free to email me…or comment…with suggestions of verses.  I’ll try to keep them simple enough to memorize, but helpful, stand-alone verses.)

Please note: I reserve the right to delete comments that are offensive or off-topic.

  1. Here is my approach…

Welcome to technology…in lieu of the traditional picture which I have historically had on my iphone, I have chosen to copy and paste your verse of the week into my notes app, take a picture and place it as my wallpaper/background. I am placing the date on the page as well to know my deadline and to go check for a new verse.
    Count me in!

    • I love this approach. What a great idea… You have to look at that screen all the time anyway…may as well be helpful!

    • Good idea…except that not everyone who reads my blog (including most people in my church) are on Twitter. Plus, with Twitter it would be harder to find through the week. Once you Tweet it, if someone has many followers, it's soon gone from record. Thanks!

  2. I would love the challenge; my problem is Dyslexia! Memorizing is not exactly…..exact. You are right about one thing though, we need to hide these in our hearts; can’t fight without weapons!
    Let’s do this!!

  3. I'm in. I'll add this to the list of other things I'll be memorizing this year, like child development theories, psychotherapy theories and the APA Style Manual. I'm declaring my 2011 The Year of Learning… : )
