That's a great question. I like the wait until it's sincere approach. I usually took the time in these occasions to process with the child. Huge teaching moment. Good add.

In light of this, what are your thoughts on telling children to apologize to someone they've hurt when you know they are not sorry? Politeness dictates that one apologize immediately, but honesty dictactes that one waits until he or she can honestly say, "I'm sorry". Does one trump the other or is this not an either-or issue? I've been mulling this over for a while as a Christian and as a future Child and Family Therapist...

Excellent suggestions! Thanks, Ron. It's an issue we're dealing with, unfortunately, in both of our older boys at the moment (actually, our daughter, too, if TRUTH be told). Honesty is a high priority with my husband and I and we both try to emulate it in all aspects of our life and try to encourage them the times when they are being honest, but it's an ongoing struggle. Have to keep keeping on, I guess . . . sigh!

I think you're right and it's true in so many areas of life. Small things repeated over time have the potential for huge impact. Thanks!

I think being honest about the smallest things helps when it's harder to be honest. An analogy? A math problem. If we get in the habit of showing our work for the most easy and most familiar equations, then when the equations become more complex we will be in such a habit of solving them properly that we will not be intimidated or discouraged by the obstacles or consequences or fear of failure. In the same way, I teach my son that he must learn to be brave to tell the truth about little things so that he will develop the moral courage it may take one day to tell a man-sized truth.

I believe we have gotten in such a bad habit of being dishonest that we do not realize how dishonest we really are. When we see a sign for Krispy Kreme's at K-Mart that says "Save 40%", isn't what that REALLY means is "Spend 60%"? People are asked all day long, "How are you?" Are we all REALLY "fine" all the time?
