My experience has been that I do my self more harm trying to set the record straight than the critic was doing to me in the first place. I don't remember where this came from but it makes sense to me: "Don't wrestle with a pig. The pig likes it and you just get dirty."

I read this this morning ... "It is not the critic who counts, not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles or the where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood." - Theo. Roosevelt.

It occurs to me that sometimes we (myself included) complain about the critics when we have no dust, sweat and blood on our face ... indeed ... haven't even been in the arena. Such criticism is probably justified. On the other hand, if we do have dust, sweat, and blood that has been gained in the arena of activity ... especially righteous and meaningful activity ... there will ALWAYS be criticism directed our way ... that is the way of the enemy of souls. Is it not?

Renee, the key is not to respond "in anger". When we are angry we say and do things we wouldn't normally do. The John 2 passage of Jesus driving the people out of the temple is key for me. "So He made a whip" indicates to me that He took time to think and pray through His response. Some things deserve a strong reaction. Turning the cheek does not mean we allow others to walk over us. The fact is, however, that we can't chase down every negative things someone says. If the overwhelming story about us is good, especially to the ones whose opinion matters most to us, then we can hold our head high and not worry as much about those with nothing better to do than criticize.

So... what ARE you supposed to do? When people are out there spreading complete LIES, (when you KNOW for a FACT it's NOT true) when they're crushing your character over and over... do you really just turn the other cheek? Do you really let them just continue to say these horrible things about you and hope the truth comes out in the end? Can I just make a t-shirt that says "I hate haters" and be done with it? Just kidding. Sort of. *sigh* I just don't understand why people have nothing better to do with their lives than bring other people down who are trying to make the world a better place.

You need to produce an iPhone app for us that advises us in many difficult situations: if "this" happens then you should consider "that" - I enjoyed being reminded - thank you :-)
