John Madden Retiring…I Will Miss Him

I read today that John Madden is retiring. I’ve grown up with this guy.  John Madden has been an enthusiastic football announcer most of my football viewing life and before he started announcing I enjoyed him as a coach.  Whether you like football or not, you could be entertained with John Madden behind the microphone.  He always seemed like he was someone you would want to hang out with after the game.   Madden appeared to have a “give it all you’ve got” approach to whatever he did and I admire that in a person.  His energy and enthusiasm for the game of football and life is inspiring.

Of course, along with the his extensive football history, Madden was known for colorful commentary.  Here are some John Madden quotes I found online:

“Self-praise is for losers. Be a winner. Stand for something. Always have class, and be humble.”

“The road to Easy Street goes through the sewer.”

“Coaches have to watch for what they don’t want to see and listen to what they don’t want to hear.”

“When your arm gets hit, the ball is not going to go where you want it to.”

“The fewer rules a coach has, the fewer rules there are for players to break.”

Those principles aren’t just for football.  Thanks John.  I will miss you.
